Preventing Leather Colour Transfer: First Use, Rain, Sweat and Storage

Start by checking what the leather touches

Look beyond the body of the bag. The underside of the strap, the back against your waist and the handles you grip also touch clothes or skin. Check trouser pockets for a wallet, or the bag lining for small leather accessories, according to how you use them.

Understand the different roles of sprays and conditioners

Waterproofing and water-repellent products are intended to help with water exposure. A “waterproof” label alone does not show that a product prevents friction-related colour transfer. Check both material compatibility and whether the stated benefits match what you need.

Do not casually use colour-restoring products on bags

Pause before applying the coloured shoe cream you use on footwear to a scuffed bag. Columbus advises against coloured creams on bags and small leather goods because of colour transfer. Treat colour restoration and everyday care as separate tasks.[3]

Keep items from pressing against each other in storage

When placing bags on a shelf, avoid pressing dark leather against pale leather. If you use a storage bag, make sure the item is dry and choose a covering suited to its storage instructions.

The same applies to wallets and small accessories. Not using an item does not remove the risk: occasionally check the fabrics or leather touching it and the condition of its storage space.

Does black clothing remove the risk of colour transfer?

A stain being hard to see does not mean colour has not transferred. Dark clothes can also mark leather, so do not judge the risk only by the colour of your outfit.

Will using a water-repellent spray every time make it safe?

More frequent spraying does not necessarily prevent colour transfer. Check the product’s purpose and recommended frequency, and continue to consider contact with clothing.

Can carrying the bag by hand prevent colour transfer?

It changes where the bag touches your body, but the handles or bag can still rub against clothing. Check the contact points after changing how you carry it.

Will colour transfer stop after long use?

There is no number of uses or time period that applies to every product. Check the condition after first use and whenever rain, sweat or a change of clothing affects contact.

Should I apply cream as soon as colour transfers?

First stop the contact. Check whether the mark is on clothing or leather, then find a suitable approach for that material before adding cream.
