A water-repellent spray may seem an easy precaution for a new leather bag, but rain protection and colour transfer are separate issues. A spray intended to repel water is not automatically a colour fixative.

When wearing favourite clothes, check the finish, usage and ways to avoid rain rather than relying on spray alone. Here is how to choose a product and use it safely.

Water-repellent spray and colour fixing are different

Read the stated purpose rather than relying on the product name. Water protection does not necessarily prevent dye transfer; do not assume an effect the manufacturer does not claim.
