A short photography trip: before packing cameras and clothes together

Photograph the light in an unfamiliar street and enjoy a small adventure. Once you reach your accommodation, it is lovely to leave the clothes behind and head out with just your camera.

Begin packing by setting aside the space your equipment needs for protection. Separate what you carry in transit from what you use while shooting, then decide whether one bag or two makes more sense.

Do not rely on clothing as protective padding

Would you like to take out the camera with its lens attached, or detach it for compact transport? Start by matching your equipment and protective case to your shooting style. Give the equipment a place in a dedicated insert rather than simply packing clothes into the gaps.

When using a travel bag, prepare an insert suited to your equipment and check the opening and interior so the case can be taken in and out. Being able to lift it out on arrival makes it easier to head out light.

Picture your load after unpacking at your accommodation

One approach is to put clothing in a travel bag and photography equipment in a smaller bag. This increases the number of bags, but lets you leave clothing at your accommodation before heading out.

If you will carry everything throughout the trip, prioritize whether two bags and their contents would be too heavy. Reconsider your load by taking less equipment or checking whether luggage storage is available.

Assess suitability and ask before buying

A bag for clothes in transit and another for photography on foot can give the trip a comfortable rhythm. Make use of what you already own and choose an addition for the role still missing.
