A morning at the market: choosing a small bag to keep your hands free

The smell of freshly baked bread makes you stop, then you admire pottery in the next shop. A market or shopping street explored without a fixed list offers unexpected pleasures.

Even if you leave with little, you may return with extra paper bags. Separating your payment essentials from the way you carry purchases lets you browse more calmly.

Leave your hands free to examine things at the shop

Follow the shop’s guidance when handling goods, and keep your bags where they will not bump things around you. If you expect more hand-carried purchases, keeping your wallet and keys in a small bag worn on your body makes it easier to separate these actions.

However, not every hands-free design is comfortable. With a waist pouch, check how it sits when you walk or bend. For a shoulder bag, choose a strap length that lets you bring it forward, open it, close it properly and return it to position.

Do not assume one payment method will work everywhere

Accepted payment methods vary by shop. Check information about your destination, keeping in mind that cash may be needed. Before leaving, sort receipts and unused cards so the essentials are visible when you open your wallet.

After paying, put your wallet away before taking the goods. Rather than rushing to the next shop, checking once for anything left behind can save a return trip. Keeping receipts and other papers in the same small pouch stops them scattering.

Carry purchases comfortably in a separate bag

Bread, vegetables and fragile pottery need different bags. One lightweight shopping bag will not necessarily carry everything together. Ask the shop about suitable packaging for the weight and shape of what you buy.

As shopping bags accumulate, reassess how you carry them. Several handles around your wrist or another bag layered over a shoulder strap can make reaching for things difficult. Make a pause to regroup part of your walk around town.
