How to Reduce Colour Transfer from Leather: Enjoy Your Favourite Clothes and Bags with a Little Care

A white shirt with a brown leather bag is a lovely combination. It would be a shame to wear it less often simply because you're worried about colour transfer.

You can reduce the risk by paying attention to rain, sweat, friction and items left touching in storage. Rather than searching for one product that promises to prevent everything, think about ways to enjoy both your clothes and your bag.

Start with where the leather touches your clothes

A shoulder strap touches your shoulder, a crossbody can rub against your chest or hip, and a backpack sits against your back. Movement creates friction wherever the leather makes contact. With pale clothes, think about where the bag rests against your body as well as the colour of the leather.

Colour can also travel the other way, from dark denim onto leather. When pairing new jeans with a light-coloured leather bag, check the clothing's care label, too.

Choose the first outfit for a new bag with a little care

When a bag arrives, first read its care notes. Then gently pass a clean, dry white cloth over a hidden area to see how it responds. There's no need to rub hard. If colour comes off on the cloth, ask the retailer before pairing the bag with pale clothing.

Even if no colour comes off then, rain or sweat can change the conditions. Try a short outing first to get to know the bag, and take your time before wearing it with a treasured white outfit. A little patience makes starting with new leather more comfortable.

Keep another option for rainy or sweaty days

On a day when rain is likely, or you'll walk enough to perspire, you might avoid an outfit where leather stays against pale fabric for a long time. It's fine to let your favourite rest and use another bag that day.

If the leather gets wet, blot away moisture with a dry cloth without rubbing, then dry it in a well-ventilated place in the shade. Check the backs of straps and handles for dampness before putting it away. A leather belt worn against clothes deserves the same attention to sweat and friction.

Understand what sprays and creams can do

Waterproofing spray can help with exposure to water, but it doesn't completely prevent colour transfer. Leather creams and oils won't necessarily stop dye rubbing off either, and they may change the colour or feel of the leather.

If you use one, check that it's suitable for the leather's finish and test a small amount in a hidden area. Doing one necessary treatment at a time, rather than layering several products, makes it easier to notice changes.

Store it away from pale items

Avoid leaving the bag on a sofa or white clothing when you get home. Give it a place where the leather won't remain pressed against other items. After rain, let both the outside and inside dry before storing it.

Even leather that has developed a lovely sheen still needs care around rain and friction. Enjoying a patina doesn't mean colour transfer can no longer happen. Keeping the two in mind helps you look after both bag and clothes.

Choose a leather bag with its carrying style in mind

On your back, over your shoulder or in your hand: when choosing a shape you love, also think about how it touches what you're wearing. Here are two options with different ways of carrying them.

A cowhide bag that can be used as a tote, backpack or shoulder bag. It measures approximately 32 × 15 × 33 cm, weighs around 1.7 kg and has small-item pockets inside. Consider it if you'd like to change how you carry it to suit your journey or outfit. As a backpack, notice the contact at the straps and back; carried by hand, think about handles and sleeves.

A cowhide bag measuring approximately 13 cm wide × 19 cm high × 3 cm deep and weighing around 0.3 kg. It has a magnetic-button flap, a rear transit-card pocket and a divided inner pocket. Consider it for days with a carefully chosen wallet and device. Adjusting the strap also lets you choose where it rests against your body.

Questions about preventing colour transfer

Will it stop transferring colour once it's well used?

You can't tell from the length of use alone. Rain, sweat, friction and clothing materials all affect the conditions. Even with a familiar bag, take a little care when wearing pale clothes.

If colour gets on my clothes, should I rub it with detergent straight away?

First stop the contact and check the garment's care label. Rubbing hard can spread the stain or damage the fabric. For cherished garments or those that can't be washed at home, ask a cleaner for advice and explain that the colour came from leather.

These small precautions help you enjoy your favourite combinations. With a little attention to the weather and how you carry your bag, leather can remain a pleasure to wear.
